Taylor Madrigal speaks on the creation of "Spark One"

“im sittin here waiting for this spark one video to finish processing, and im bored as hell, so ima write up a little bit on how this song came about, and what it means to me.

i found the sample for “spark one” in 2009. i tried to make a beat out of it right when i got it, because i already knew what i wanted it to sound like, but i wasnt really good enough at producing to get it to sound like what i was hearing in my head. the 1st version was super basic and sucked, so i scrapped it. the 2nd incarnation of the beat, was as a remix to a song by Unfuh Qwittable, Ramiro X, and 80H20, called “Im Outta Here”, and it sounded pretty dope, but i couldnt get spencers part to get on beat, and i tried for literally an entire day, but my basic ass couldnt get it to work. so once again, i scrapped it. the 3rd version of the beat was used as the backing track for a school project i did in high school with my girlfriend at the time. that got turned in, so thats good. finally, the 4th incarnation of the beat was made during the “Permed Out Wednesdays” series of releases, when me, dylan, bobby, and yakub were working on alot of material together. i brought the beat over to the place dylan was living at the time over at 4th & 4th, near dinkytown. kind of weird that its right next door to where my mother once lived, and i went to elementary school about 50 feet from there. but i digress. i think they way that it worked was that i first gave tommy the beat, and he did his verse, and the chorus, which he told me was something he had for a while, but didnt record or use it for anything else. so after tommy was done recording, tommy sent the session over to dylans, and bobby wrote and recorded his verse, and i remember vividly that he kept gettin slipped up on the “creepin thru the city” line towards the end, but he eventually killed it. like a g. we were trying to figure out how we were gonna fit yakub, and ramiro on the song, and i suggested that for the last verse, they each do an 8 bar verse. and they did it, and killed it. i actually made the beat with the assumption and hopes that dylan would get on it, which he intended to, but he ended up getting a bit too turnt on the last night of recording, so it wasnt able to go down. we released the song that night i believe. this whole process, from the time that i made the final beat, to tommy recording his verse and chorus, to all the other verses getting recorded, was done in a span of i think 2 days. kind of crazy. so thats how the song came about.

(side note: the sessions of this song were actually lost when dylans computer crashed. the version you hear in the video and on “WeOutChea” is the original rough mix that was first released online. we have it to the homie mike frey to see what he could do with it, and i think he made it sound better actually.)

chapter 2: the video.

ive always loved this song, ever since it was made, and came out. i loved it. very very much. so naturally, i wanted to do a video for it. i linked up with kale thru dylan, and thought he would be good to do the video. i knew he would take it serious, and put the time into it that it deserved. we organized an initial video shoot on april 20th, 2012, to take place at the scoundrel house in NE minneapolis, where unfuh, ramiro, jake, and other homies were staying at the time. i had a pretty direct vision for what i wanted the video to look like, so i kind of took it upon myself to set up the upstairs to match my vision for the video. i went to multiple thrift stores, looking for sheets, with mostly tan, white, or brown colors, and with the help of my best friend, allen kendall, transformed the upstairs of their crib, into what i thought the video for spark one should look like. we also hauled about 3 or 4 extra couches up there, to fit the people we were expecting to come thru to the video shoot. the video shoot itself went pretty well. we were planning on having a type of “barbeque, spark one video shoot, smoke out” type thing goin on. the video shoot itself worked out lovely. i had about 4 or 5 memory cards worth of spark one material that i then put onto a portable hard drive. i then met up with assistant director for the video, fred sanders, to get him the footage. while he was transfering the files to his computer, an error occured, and wiped out everything on the entire hard drive.

all the footage for the video was lost.

of course, i pretty much shit my pants, i got super mad at fred, i was mad at him for like a month, but i realized it was my fault, i shoulda had it backed up. i then contacted a friend of mine that works for geek squad, ian gacek, who said he might might might be able to help. i gave him the hard drive, and waited in anticipation while he went to work on the hard drive. he kept sending me texts like “i might have it, its like 60 percent possible that i might have gotten it” and i was TRIPPIN. but eventually. thru some sort of amazing stroke of luck. he recovered the files. every file was recovered. so we got it cracking, got the files to fred and kale. and the editing process begun.

after the inital shoot, kale tried to get to every show that we did in order to get live performance footage to use in the video. him and our dude Baby Alan did most of the live performace footage. they got footage from Soundset ‘12, ScHoolboy Q & Ab-Soul @ Cabooze, I Self Devines “Sounds Of Low Class Amerika” Release Party, P.O.S. “We Don’t Even Live Here” Release Party, A.G. @ Honey, Murs @ Augsburg, Permed Out Showcase II @ Cabooze, The Audio Perm Block Party, and many more.

(side note: another funny story was that. the memory containing the footage from our performance from Soundset ‘12, was actually lost AT SOUNDSET, but that was also eventually FOUND. not sure who found it, but that was awesome.)

the editing process itself took i think somewhere around 4 or 5 months. kale put in around 150 hours of work into this one video. i am very grateful for everything hes done and all the work that hes put in. i cant wait for yall to be able to see this shit.

“Earlier this year, I met up with Manny and Julian, on some let’s-change-the-game-type-shit. We sat in the MCAD library and brainstormed a couple notebook sheets worth of ideas for progression. Manny told me that he wanted to create an online space – that only local artists would have access to – where new shows, videos, announcements would be posted, and the artists could work together in a sort of “co-op” street team fashion. I asked him if he had ever heard the theory of Social Capital, to which he answered, no. Personally, I knew I would be able to create with this dude, because of the way he took to this term and literally created it his life motto/EP title. Mista Manuel has something I like to call an “ol’ soul”, possessing bars (on bars, on bars) representative of a grounded wisdom, far beyond its years.”

The Odd Future singer’s debut studio album was a critical & commercial success when it was released back in July. Instead of taking to social media to share thier feelings about the album, Cory Grindberg and Taylor Madrigal of Audio Perm took a big more time to sit down with the album, and wrote an entire track by track review/analysis of the record, in their own fashion.

: ok some phone noises, tv noises, playstation noises, tight, thats whats up. you know i fuck with playstations. damn that was the whole song though? cmon son.

: yeah I don’t really get what’s going on here, what those first noises are vs. when it gets all quiet and we hear video games and shit. Damn that ps2 gets me ultra nostalgic tho. (get it? ULTRA nostalgic? Lololololol)

2. Thinkin Bout You
: oooooh yeah this is tight as fuck. this is some blue shit for sure. i listen to alot of r&b, and i really cant compare anything to this. he definitely went in. i feel like this would be a good song to sipp sizzurp to, if one was to do that. yup. im fuckin with this one.

: FUCK THIS SONG IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TIGHT THIS SHIT GIVES ME CHILLS. I fucks with how simple the beat is. The chords are nice, the drums are simple and nice, which just enables frank to SNAP THE FUCK OFF. Yo, that falsetto in the chorus makes my dick hard, straight up. Illest falsetto ever. That shit makes the song. I like how he says beach house in Idaho.

3. Fertilizer
: ok ok, more tv sounds i got it. tv shit. this sounds pretty cool, sounds a little bit too much like stevie wonder for me to get into it though. and that was a short ass song too what the fuck?

: Is this whole album like a bunch of channels or something? Dude flipping through TV channels and shit? The skits make me think that. Guess dude with the remote wasn’t feelin this one. NEXT TRACK

4. Sierra Leone
: i like the drum pattern on this shit, real weird. awwwww that guitar on the hook is crazy, i love that. yeah this is some nighttime beach shit. this shit keeps getting tighter as the song goes on, i like that. some horizontal shit going on. really digging the background singing.

: Borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring. “and I just ran out of Trojans” hahahahahaha that shit is funny. I like how he talks and then sings what he just said. But man, those strings over that bassline are not doing it for me. Shit makes me wanna vomit and get a headache and take like 9 ibus. Taylor prolly loves this shit. I kinda like when those big ass strings come in but I ain’t tryna wait a minute and 39 seconds to hear that. No idea what frank is singing about.

5. Sweet Life
: im really fuckin with the lyrics on this one. beat is good too. i feel like cory likes this one alot. i hate these drums oh my god. no no no. not fucking with those at all. ick ick ick. everything else in this beat sounds pretty cool though. enjoying it still. this dude is good at singing.

: Co-produced and co-written by pharrell, eh? Sounds like it doe. Them chords are straight phareel. This song is aight, but like, the sound of these instruments is mad not on point. The drums sound soo bad, I’m with tip on that tip. Like, I don’t understand how pharrell could fuck up the sound of those live drums, considering his work on Nothin by N.O.R.E. and Pass The Courvoisier by Busta. The horns on the chorus are kinda cool tho. I could listen to this driving up and down lake street on a sunny day smoking weed with the windows down, but I’d only do that like 3 times ever. Man these chords are pretty nice tho. Sidenote: I seent that it was co-produced by pharrell, and I got my hopes up. But, yet again, post-2009 pharrell never fails to disappoint. The neptunes fell off so hard…..i used to look up a track produced by them or pharrell and get excited and expect to hear something cool and different. Not anymore, and this song is the perfect example of that. (prolly cuz chad was absent)

7. Super Rich Kids (Ft. Earl Sweatshirt)
: dope beat. some almost gospel sounding shit right here. sounding kinda 80s to me. on some morning kmoj shit for real though. this is another one where the background singing is pushing the song to the next level. tv sounds in the background, keeping the theme going, which is also tight/important to the dope levels of the album. ok ok hes on some mary g blige shit, thats cool, i love that song, this song is tight as well. i like what he did with that. this earl verse sucks so much i hate it alot. he sounds lazy and i cant get into it at all. thats one of my lyrical pet peeves is when a mafucka is saying his raps and has absolutely no conviction. you can be chill and still have conviction. the motha fucka sounds like hes bored with rap, i cant get down with that. not really sure what super rich kids has to do with the “real love” shit though. cant see where those 2 tie in, if someone could help me with that i would appreciate it. maybe cory knows.

:Again, frank ocean sings the fuck out of this song, but otherwise the shit is just fucking boring and slow. The beat is, I mean. It’s so slow. It’s a lot of songs on this CD where frank just snaps the fuck off on the singing, but the beat is mad lackluster. I like the tv noises at 0:52 and shit. I like the lyrics. Fuckin rich kids. Fuck em. And yo, earl’s verse??? Man, I have heard maaaad people be like “DUDE EARL’S VERSE ON SUPER RICH KIDS IS SO BAD DUDE WOW EARL SUCKS NOW.” And I’m like, yo, you’re right, he sounds really lazy and tired. But I’m pretty sure he’s TRYING to sound like that, because it fits the concept of the song. He’s a super rich kid, why would he be rapping all hard and angry? He’s lazy, spoiled, tired, lackadaisical, contemplating suicide; the sound of his voice fits that. I fucks with his verse. I think it fits the song really well. Fuck you rap motherfuckers

8. Pilot Jones
: this is tiiiiiiiight. singing is super ill. this reminds me of some 2000’s r&b shit. yeah du really does remind me alot of stevie though. which is a good thing. not really biting, just a few things here and there that i notice.

: “ice cold baby, I told you, I’m ice cold!! ICE COLD!” that shit is tight. This song makes me want to do hard drugs. Soooooo much bass do. I fucks with this song. Again, that beautiful falsetto. I think he says “whatchya know about it” that part is tight. This song is tight. Wagged out reverse synth noises, weird clicks and shit, hella bass, fuckin finger snaps and shit, this shit is ill. But if you ain’t got bass in your speakers, just don’t listen to it. Oh and the lyrics are cool and shit. Ay lowkey I listend to this album and I was like “what in the hell is he singing about?” so I read about it on Wikipedia and they explained everything. Should I trust them doe?

9. Crack Rock
: not really fuckin with this song at all. if he had not used that drum break for this shit, i actually would probably fuck with this song, its just very distracting. ooooh it dropped out. good. ok tight. i would fuck with an acoustic version of this pretty hard. these drums just really aint doing it for me. unnecessary breakage. i really wanna like this song though. man hes talkin about some real shit. actually this song might be tight enough for me to forget that that break is there, and just pay attention to the singing, cuz this song is tight. man. thats whats up.

: Ayeee this song is tight! These chords are SUPER TIGHT. I agree with taylor, the drum break kinda doesn’t fit, but, shit, I’m not bothered by it. : did not like the first section of this song at all. second part is super tight though, sounds like some prince funkadelic shit, definitely fuck with that. bass slappage definitely adds some needed funk into this shit. the shit i like most of all on this song/record is just this dude singing. hes just really a talented singer. these beats are all pretty dope too. compliment his voice very well. oooooh 3rd part is tight too. this is trippy. awwwwww shit. these vocal effects are raw too man. yuppppp this 3rd part is raw as fuck. love this shit. dont like them lil synth horns that came in at the last part of that verse though. unnecessary and sounded curny. this shit really gets ham towards the 7:00 mark. haha mark. na this aint no mark shit though. i am enjoying this. ill bet cory fucks with this shit at around 8:00 hard too. when that otha synth comes in. this is some eddie hazel esque guitar too. yeah super duper, wtf. hazed out. last part is pretty raw too. my favorite was the 3rd though. super ill.

: The first synths in this song, the ones that go throughout, just sound awful, like, really awful. Like I used to have some sounds like that in the fruity loops free wack ass sample packs that come with the program„ son. Again, I have no idea wtf frank is singing about. We in Egypt now, son? Word, son? You dancing with hoes in a puramyd? 1:11 is some alex baker shit. OHHH BUT when it drops at 1:28 that shit is tight!!!!! MAKES ME WANNA DANCE DOE. It would be tight to drop just that part at a dance party. Whatchu think about that, taylor? It’s all kinda boring tho until the big switch-up at 5 minutes or whatever. That whole second half is pretty cool. Cool synths and drums, but the chords are ehhh.

: THIS IS MY SHIT DUDE. These drums fucking bang, and these chords are exquisite. Dude at 0:31, I love that shit. But I feel like frank’s vocals are too loud. I wish the chords and bass were louder. In fact, I kinda feel that way about every song on this album. Vocals are too loud. Chordal instruments are too quiet. Yeah I like this song a lot tho.

14. Bad Religion
: Good writing on this joint. good singing. very emotional, passionate, which i dig alot. makes or breaks a song for me. ooooh idk about those claps comin in. kinda seeming unnecessary to me right now. i liked the way they came in, but i dont they these drums are even necessary at all. wait, now they sound tight. yup. they are tight.

: Cool song. Nice chords. Deep lyrics and shit. I appreciate this song a lot, but I prolly wouldn’t bump it, you feel me? But this shit tends to grow on you, I’m listening now and I like it more than I did last time. The entrance of those hand claps is mad awkward. I bet a lot of people like this song. I saw him do this on jimmy fallon, and that man can sing, like for real. I have mad respect for frank ocean. Dude is talented as fck.

Do something else. Okay. I fuck with andre 3000 really hard, he just makes me mad sometimes. And I’m only mad cuz I care about him and love him. No shots fired. Oh yeah I like when the beat drops on this one. It’s okay.

: not really feeling this beat at all. not even gonna say hes good at singing anymore, cuz errybody know. yeah not fuckin with this one really.

: I love this song! Yo I’m down with some corny ass chord progressions. This is one of the differences between me and taylor. This shit is just super happy and gay, and I fucks with that. drums sound kinda weak, but the pattern of them is solid. these lyrics are hella gay too; I think that’s really tight. I’m down with an R&B singer dude singing about a dude, that shit never happens. Also I read on some blog that that cigarette line is a metaphor for sucking a dick, and I’m all about metaphors for sucking dick, so that’s tight too. Why forrest gump tho?

: this shit sounds super cool. i fuck with it alot. woulda liked for this to be not a muffled out ass song, and an actual song… that would be super tight. why does it sounds like this… quiet with monster and girl noises talking over it. scaring me a bit. na yeah what the fuck? whose decision was this? man. ok so he got out the whip, walked up to the crib, opens door, locks door behind him, clothes rufflin, then turns on/off tv maybe? ok fam. i got you. tv. thats whats up. this album was tight

: I get the impression they fucking in a car. Ay taylor I think the song playing is another frank ocean song he released a while ago. This doesn’t really make sense. Most of this album doesn’t make sense, but it’s tight.

Final Thoughts:
: yeah homie snapped. like. im a sucker for cohesiveness in albums. that shit is key to me. if it aint cohesive, and the songs dont at least somewhat relate to one another, whats the point in even calling in an album, that shit is a mixtape fam… a buncha songs… but yeah this shit is raw. im not really sure why, but this album has no replay value to me though. the only song ive listened to more than like 3 times, was the joint with andre. i think it might be because i fuck with other r&b so hard, that i know that theres some iller shit, that suits me better. it kinda turned me off that i dont really understand what homies talking about all the time, besides on like, crack rock, and super rich kids and whatnot. but yeah this is a well put together album, sounds great. excited to see what he comes with in the future.

7.3 Perm Drips out of 10

: This is really really really good album. Frank Ocean made an ALBUM. This is some artistic shit and some real shit. No bullshit songs. Probably a whole lot of meaning in all the lyrics. This is some shit you have to listen to a while bunch of times, and each time you find something new in it. Hella nuances and nooks and crannies and shit. I respect this shit. That being said, the mixing is kinda weird throughout. The drums are off point in most of the songs, and there’s lost of questionable instruments. But that’s just my personal taste. Frank Ocean can SING doe, there is not one track where he doesn’t snap on the vocals. I would bump this album in my car. I rarely do that. Like, the whole album, not just the few songs I like. Shit is cohesive as fuck.
